Ways of
listening together

A sound archive exploring coastal justice, environmental change and practices of collective care.

The coast is a place of encounters. Between land and water, people and other forms of life, everyday routines and changing environments.

A shared coast

Coastal Sound Archive approaches the shoreline through sound. It asks how collective listening might bring us closer to the places we inhabit, and to questions of access, environmental change and care.

Shared attention

The project begins with a simple practice: listening to a place together. Hydrophones and portable recorders extend that attention above and beneath the water.

The first field recording session took place on 22 August 2026 with artist Tullis Rennie, beginning at De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea. Participants made the recordings that form the starting point of this archive.

Sounds in circulation

We want the archive to be a resource for making. Recordings can travel into new compositions, experiments and ways of hearing the coast.

The sampler offers a small space to begin: layer a few sounds, change their pace, listen to what happens between them.
